Capitol Area South District Launches Partnership with Liberian Ministries
The Capitol Area South District has launched a partnership with ministries in Liberia. Last year Dr. Hank Stringer called together representatives of two congregations that have initiated ministry partnerships in Liberia to explore how the support of those ministries could be widened across the CAS District.
As a result, the Rev. Glenn Schwerdtfeger and Anderson McDonald from Christ UMC, Columbus and the Rev. Jim Meredith, David Kudel, and Dr. Jeff Myers from the Groveport UMC along with District Superintendent Hank Stringer and Jim Waugh, Asst. to the Superintendent have been meeting to discuss what a partnership might look like.
The team has decided to focus on the two projects that the congregations are supporting. Christ UMC has formed a partnership with Doe Juah United Methodist Church in Monrovia, Liberia. Last summer the pastor of the congregation the Rev. Robert Sieh visited with the members of the Christ UMC congregation. The Groveport UMC under the guidance of David Kudel and Dr. Jeff Myers has concentrated on providing scholarships for school students at the Phebe School in Liberia. Last year, Jeff and David visited the school and interviewed over one hundred eighty students concerning their need for a school scholarship. As a result the members and friends of the Groveport Church and others were able to provide $70.00 scholarships (a full scholarship for the school year) to one hundred twenty six students at the school.
David and Jeff are returning to Liberia in June to continue interviews with students seeking scholarships and and to visit with students who received scholarships during the current school year.
